WhatsApp: Celulares que não funcionarão em dezembro (lista)
WhatsApp to End Support for Older Phones in December
Millions of WhatsApp users worldwide will soon find the popular messaging app incompatible with their devices. Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, is discontinuing support for a range of older smartphones starting in December, a move designed to bolster security and improve app performance.
The decision, a periodic practice by Meta, affects devices running older operating systems that can no longer receive critical security updates. According to a recent report by Statista, over 2 billion people use WhatsApp globally, making this change potentially significant for a substantial portion of the user base.
Which Phones Are Affected?
The following models will lose WhatsApp support after December:
- Apple: iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus
- Samsung: Galaxy J2
- LG: LG V10, LG G3
- Motorola: Moto G
- HTC: One M8
- Sony: Xperia Z3, Xperia Z2
WhatsApp currently requires Android 5.0 or higher, and iOS 15.1 or later. Devices falling below these requirements will no longer be able to create new accounts or verify existing ones.
Why the Change? The Importance of Security Updates
The move is primarily driven by security concerns. Older operating systems are more vulnerable to malware and cyberattacks. Without regular security patches, user data is at increased risk. “Maintaining compatibility with outdated software becomes increasingly challenging and compromises the security of all our users,” explains cybersecurity expert Dr. Anya Sharma. “It’s a necessary step to protect the platform and its billions of users.”
Beyond security, supporting older systems hinders WhatsApp’s ability to introduce new features and improvements. Modernizing the app requires a streamlined codebase that older hardware simply cannot handle efficiently.
What Happens If My Phone Is Affected?
Users with incompatible devices will likely experience a gradual decline in functionality leading up to December. Eventually, the app will become unusable. However, WhatsApp provides alternatives:
- Upgrade Your Phone: The most straightforward solution is to purchase a newer smartphone that meets the minimum operating system requirements.
- Use WhatsApp Web or Desktop: Even with an incompatible phone, users can still access WhatsApp through a web browser on a computer or via the desktop application. While lacking some mobile-specific features, it allows continued communication.
The Risks of Using an Outdated App
Continuing to use an outdated version of WhatsApp, even if possible through workarounds, poses significant risks:
- Performance Issues: Slower performance, crashes, and unexpected shutdowns.
- Security Vulnerabilities: Increased susceptibility to hacking and data breaches.
- Malware Exposure: Higher risk of infection from viruses and malicious software.
WhatsApp proactively notifies users when their devices are nearing the end of support, providing ample time to prepare. Users can check their device’s operating system version in the “About Phone” section (Android) or “General” > “About” (iOS).
This change underscores the importance of keeping software up-to-date and regularly upgrading devices to maintain security and access to the latest features. For millions of WhatsApp users, December marks a turning point – a call to embrace newer technology or explore alternative communication methods.
