Pope Leo XIV Appoints Nigerian Augustinian Fr. Daleng Vatican Vice-Regent
Nigerian Augustinian Priest Appointed Vice-Regent of Papal Household
VATICAN CITY — In a significant move reflecting the global reach of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV has appointed Father Edward Daniang Daleng, O.S.A., a Nigerian priest, as the new vice-regent of the Prefecture of the Papal Household. The appointment places an African clergyman in a key administrative role within the Vatican.
Father Daleng, who previously served as the General Councillor and Procurator General of the Order of St. Augustine, brings a wealth of experience and a diverse background to his new position. The Prefecture of the Papal Household is responsible for organizing papal audiences, liturgical ceremonies, and handling other official activities involving the pontiff.
A Journey from Nigeria’s Plateau State to the Vatican
Born on April 4, 1977, in Yitla’ar, Kwalla, Plateau State, Nigeria, Father Daleng’s journey in the Augustinian Order began with his first profession on November 9, 2001. He took his solemn vows on November 13, 2004, and was ordained a priest on September 10, 2005. His academic pursuits led him to achieve a Doctorate in Moral Theology from the Alphonsian Academy in 2012.
His ascent through the ranks of the Augustinian Order, culminating in his role as General Councillor and Procurator General, underscores a distinguished career marked by dedication to spiritual leadership and administrative acumen. This appointment highlights the increasing recognition of the vibrant and growing contributions of African clergy to the universal Church.
Augustinian Leadership: A Global Perspective
Father Daleng’s perspective on global Church leadership was recently shared in an interview with Vatican media, conducted shortly after Pope Leo XIV’s election. In it, Daleng reflected on the deep connection a former Augustinian superior general, Father Prevost, had with the African continent.
“He has Africa in his heart,” Daleng recounted. “He visited all our African missions multiple times and came to my country, Nigeria, on at least ten occasions. This included in 2016, when we celebrated our first intermediate general chapter.”
Daleng further emphasized Prevost’s commitment, adding, “To understand how much he cared for my country, suffice it to remember that after becoming Prior General on his 46th birthday, September 14, by November he was already with us in Nigeria. He never missed a chapter; he was always present.”
These reflections from Father Daleng paint a picture of an Augustinian Order deeply engaged with its global missions, particularly across Africa, a continent central to the future growth and vitality of the Catholic Church worldwide. Such experiences likely informed Daleng’s own global outlook, now crucial for his role in the Papal Household.
Reflecting a Diverse, Global Church
Father Daleng’s appointment is more than just a personnel change; it is a powerful symbol of the global Catholic Church’s evolving leadership. With over 1.3 billion adherents, the Church is increasingly diverse, and appointments like this send a clear signal of inclusion and recognition for clergy from burgeoning Catholic communities, particularly in Africa.
As the Vatican continues its mission of spiritual guidance and global outreach, key appointments such as this demonstrate a commitment to drawing on the talents and experiences of clergy from every corner of the world. It underscores the international character of the Holy See and its dedication to serving a global flock.
