IHSA state championship football games will not be played at Illinois State on Saturday
Illinois High School Football Championships Postponed Amidst Impending Blizzard
NORMAL, Ill. – A blanket of uncertainty has fallen over the Illinois high school football scene as the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) announced the unprecedented postponement of its state championship games, originally scheduled for Saturday at Illinois State University’s Hancock Stadium. A powerful winter storm, predicted to bring significant snowfall to the region, forced the university to close its campus, leaving four championship contests – representing the state’s largest classifications – without a home.
A Historic Disruption
This marks the first time in the 51-year history of the IHSA state football playoffs that championship games have been postponed. The affected contests include the Class 8A, 7A, 6A, and 5A championships, pitting some of the state’s most formidable high school football programs against each other. “The postponement of the IHSA Football State Finals is unprecedented,” IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson stated in a released statement. “All of the competing teams in Class 5A, 6A, 7A and 8A have been alerted that their state championship games will not be played on November 29, but that they will be played in the coming days.”
The decision wasn’t taken lightly. The safety of players, coaches, fans, and event staff was paramount, officials said. The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for much of central Illinois, forecasting heavy snow and strong winds that could create dangerous travel conditions. According to the National Weather Service, the storm system is part of a larger pattern of severe weather impacting the Midwest.
Searching for a New Gridiron
The IHSA has ruled out playing the games on Sunday, immediately launching a search for alternative venues. Sources indicate the association is exploring options beyond the immediate vicinity of Illinois State University. The logistical challenges are considerable, requiring a facility capable of accommodating the large crowds expected for these championship games, as well as providing adequate support infrastructure.
Phil Segroves, Athletic Director at Mount Carmel High School, one of the teams vying for the Class 8A title, confirmed the postponement. “I have heard that the games are canceled at ISU,” Segroves said. “We have not heard where they might be played. The IHSA told me they are considering the games to be on pause.” The uncertainty is understandably frustrating for players and their families, who have been preparing for this weekend for months.
The Teams Caught in the Delay
The four championship matchups now awaiting a rescheduled date are:
- Class 5A: St. Francis vs. Providence
- Class 6A: Fenwick vs. East St. Louis
- Class 7A: St. Rita vs. Brother Rice
- Class 8A: Mount Carmel vs. Oswego
Each of these teams represents a community deeply invested in high school football. The championship games are not just sporting events; they are celebrations of teamwork, dedication, and school spirit. The delay throws a wrench into those plans, but the IHSA is committed to ensuring these athletes have the opportunity to compete for a state title.
Beyond the Field: The Broader Impact of Climate-Related Disruptions
This postponement isn’t an isolated incident. Increasingly, sporting events and other public gatherings are being disrupted by extreme weather events, a trend directly linked to climate change. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reports that the past decade (2011-2020) was the warmest on record, and that extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and intense. In fact, according to the World Meteorological Organization, the economic impact of weather, water and climate extremes has increased fivefold over the past 50 years.
This situation highlights the growing need for contingency planning and resilient infrastructure to mitigate the impact of climate change on all aspects of society, including high school athletics. While the IHSA is focused on rescheduling these games, the broader context underscores the importance of addressing the underlying causes of these increasingly frequent disruptions.
The IHSA has a detailed adverse weather policy, outlining procedures for suspending or postponing events due to inclement weather. However, the scale of this particular storm and the unprecedented nature of the postponement demonstrate the evolving challenges posed by a changing climate. The association is working diligently to find a solution that prioritizes the safety of all involved and allows these deserving teams to compete for a state championship.
The coming days will be crucial as the IHSA navigates the logistical hurdles and works to secure a new venue and date for these highly anticipated games. The focus remains on providing a safe and memorable championship experience for the players, coaches, and fans who have dedicated so much to this season.
