Ferrari Boss John Elkann Criticizes Hamilton and Leclerc After Disappointing Season
In the wake of a challenging Formula 1 season that has seen Ferrari fall short of expectations, team president John Elkann has publicly voiced his dissatisfaction with drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, urging them to focus more on driving and less on speaking.
Elkann’s pointed remarks followed another disappointing weekend for the Scuderia, with both cars retiring from the Brazilian Grand Prix. Speaking to reporters, Elkann acknowledged the team’s progress in other areas, stating, “If you look at the car, our mechanics are practically winning the championship with their performance and everything done in the pit stops. Our engineers have undoubtedly improved the car. But in other areas, we are still not at the required level.”
“More Driving, Less Talking”
The Ferrari president was direct in his criticism of the team’s drivers, implying they should shift their focus. “We certainly have drivers who should concentrate more on driving and talk less,” Elkann stated. He emphasized the importance of the remaining races, noting, “There are still important races to be had, and it is not impossible to achieve second place in the Constructors’ Championship. That is the most important message.” This sentiment has been widely interpreted as a significant rebuke to both Hamilton and Leclerc.
Hamilton Responds Amidst “Nightmare” Season
Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion, described his debut season with Ferrari as a “nightmare” in an earlier statement, having failed to win any of the 21 Grands Prix held so far and currently sitting sixth in the drivers’ standings. Despite the public critique, Hamilton indicated that his relationship with Elkann remains strong, sharing, “John and I have a good connection; we speak on the phone almost weekly.”
When asked about Elkann’s criticism, Hamilton chose not to comment directly, but offered a reflective perspective on his time with the iconic Italian team. “Sometimes I still have to pinch myself to realize that I drive for Ferrari,” Hamilton said. “It’s almost romantic when I get to the factory. I believe I haven’t been to any factory as often as this one.” He reaffirmed his commitment, adding, “I am fully focused on my task. I couldn’t be thinking more about driving. When I get up, I think about it, and when I go to bed, I do too. I even dream about it.”
The veteran driver’s dedication underscores the high stakes and intense pressure that define Formula 1, particularly for a team with Ferrari’s storied history and global fanbase. The team’s pursuit of second place in the Constructors’ Championship remains a key objective for the remainder of the season.
