Czech U21 Football Team Starts Euro 2027 Qualifying Campaign Under New Coach Bílek
Czech U21 Team Faces Uphill Battle Against Portugal After Mixed Qualifying Start
The Czech Republic’s U21 football team finds itself at a critical juncture in its Euro 2027 qualifying campaign. After a turbulent start under new head coach Michal Bílek, the young Lions must now confront a formidable opponent in Portugal, with a spot in the Olympics also hanging in the balance.
Following a disappointing European Championship, the entire coaching staff for the Czech U21 side was revamped, with Michal Bílek taking the helm. The team, comprised of players from key age groups, has set its sights on qualifying for the next European Championship, a crucial step towards potentially reaching the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. This aspiration adds significant weight to every match in what is considered a challenging Group B.

The campaign began positively with a hard-fought home victory against Scotland. Goals from Kričfaluši and Eduardo (from the penalty spot, awarded three times) secured a 2-0 win in Uherské Hradiště, suggesting a strong start. However, a subsequent trip to Gibraltar served as a stark warning. Despite facing the group’s apparent underdog on artificial turf, the Czechs struggled, only managing to turn the scoreline around after conceding a penalty themselves. Vojta and Mašek eventually secured a crucial, albeit unconvincing, 2-1 victory.
Confidence grew in October when the Czechs demolished Azerbaijan 5-0 in Karviná. Jan Mašek netted a hat-trick, and Ambrose and Planka added goals to complete the rout. Yet, this success was followed by a significant setback that could prove costly in the final standings. Travelling to Bulgaria, the Czechs took an early lead through Šín, but Bulgaria quickly equalized via Ilijev. A subpar second-half performance from the Czechs was ultimately punished five minutes from time when Panajotov scored the winner, handing the Lions a 1-2 defeat.
This loss has put immediate pressure on the team. While they remain in second place, which currently guarantees a playoff spot, Bulgaria and Scotland are hot on their heels. The upcoming fixture against Portugal, the group’s strongest contender, presents the toughest test yet. The team’s recent form doesn’t inspire much confidence, evidenced by a narrow 1-2 friendly loss to Serbia in Pardubice. Despite taking the lead from a second-half penalty, goals from Jovanović and Mijatović sealed a deserved victory for the Serbian side, who were marginally the better team on the day.
The question now is whether the Czech U21 team can summon an improved performance, perhaps their best of the campaign so far, to challenge the favorites and secure a result that could significantly boost their qualification hopes.
