Zelensky Responds Calmly to Trump’s ‘Ungrateful’ Claim
Zelensky Responds to Trump’s ‘Ungrateful’ Claim Amid Peace Plan Dispute
Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has offered a measured response to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s assertion that Ukraine is “ungrateful” for American support, a charge leveled after Zelensky rejected a U.S.-proposed peace plan aimed at ending the conflict with Russia.
Trump’s criticism, delivered via his Truth Social platform on Sunday, came as Kyiv continues to receive substantial military aid from the United States. He accused Ukraine of failing to acknowledge U.S. efforts while simultaneously noting continued European reliance on Russian oil and the flow of American weaponry to NATO for distribution to Ukraine.
“‘THE LEADERSHIP’ OF UKRAINA IS NOT EXPRESSING ANY GRATITUDE AT ALL FOR OUR EFFORTS,” Trump wrote, using capitalization for emphasis.
The dispute centers on a 28-point peace proposal reportedly requiring significant concessions from Ukraine, including the surrender of territory currently held by Russia. Many observers believe the plan heavily favors Moscow’s demands.
Zelensky, in a post on Telegram, directly addressed Trump’s claims, stating Ukraine is deeply thankful to the United States, to every American citizen, and specifically to Trump himself for assistance, citing the provision of Javelin missiles as life-saving.
“Ukraine is grateful to the United States, to every heart of American citizens, and especially to President Trump for the help, which began with (Javelin) missiles, which saved the lives of Ukrainian citizens,” Zelensky wrote.
He also expressed gratitude to European nations and the G7 and G20 groups for their ongoing support, emphasizing the importance of maintaining this assistance. “This is why we are working very carefully at every point, every step towards peace. Everything must be done correctly so that we can really end this war and prevent it from happening again,” Zelensky added.
Peace Talks and Sticking Points
Negotiations involving Ukrainian, U.S., and European officials took place in Geneva, Switzerland, on Sunday to discuss the proposed peace plan. These talks followed Zelensky’s initial rejection of the proposal, which he described as presenting “very difficult choices” for Ukraine.
The U.S. plan reportedly calls for Ukraine to cede portions of its eastern territory to Russia, reduce its military forces, and permanently forgo NATO membership. Trump had given Zelensky until November 27th to accept the proposal.
The conflict in Ukraine, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties and widespread destruction. According to the United Nations, over 10,000 civilians have been confirmed killed, with the actual number likely significantly higher. The war has also triggered a major humanitarian crisis, displacing millions of Ukrainians both internally and as refugees in neighboring countries.
Trump, during a rally on Friday, blamed President Joe Biden for failing to prevent the war, arguing it “should never have happened.” He characterized the conflict as a devastating and unnecessary tragedy.
“I INHERITED A WAR THAT SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED, A WAR THAT IS HURTING EVERYONE, ESPECIALLY THE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WHO ARE DYING VERY UNNECESSARILY,” he stated.
The situation remains fluid, with the outcome of the peace negotiations uncertain. The international community continues to call for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, but significant obstacles remain.
