Zelensky on US Peace Plan: Poland Must Be Consulted
Ukraine Seeks Broader European Role in Peace Talks, Rejects Imposed Terms
KYIV, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is actively seeking a more prominent role for European nations in ongoing peace discussions with Russia, asserting that any lasting resolution must be a collaborative effort and cannot be unilaterally imposed by Moscow. The push for wider European involvement comes as a deadline set by former U.S. President Donald Trump looms, and as Ukraine explores alternative peace proposals.
Zelenskyy, in a phone conversation with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, underscored the importance of collective action. “For us it is important that all partners who have been with us from the beginning of this war are informed about the situation,” Zelenskyy stated in a social media post. “We are coordinating actions so that Europe is involved in this process.”

Tusk, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), emphasized Poland’s position, stating, “Everything concerning Poland must be agreed with the Polish government.” This comment specifically referenced a point within the proposed U.S. peace plan that involves the stationing of European fighter jets in Poland.
A Delicate Balance of Diplomacy
The situation is further complicated by a deadline set by Trump, who has claimed he gave Ukraine until Thursday (November 27th) to accept his proposed peace plan. While details of Trump’s plan remain largely undisclosed, it has reportedly prompted Ukraine, along with France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, to work on an alternative proposal.
Zelenskyy has stressed the need for a broader principle to guide negotiations. “Now it is about something much more important than individual points of any document,” he said in a video address. “It is necessary to ensure that nowhere in Europe or the world the principle that crimes against people and humanity, against states and nations can be rewarded or forgiven in any way is not consolidated.”
The stakes are exceptionally high. According to the United Nations Human Rights Office, as of November 24th, 2023, over 10,000 civilian deaths have been verified in Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022, though the actual number is believed to be considerably higher. The conflict has also displaced millions, creating a significant humanitarian crisis and destabilizing the geopolitical landscape of Europe.
Consultations with partners regarding the necessary steps to end the war are expected in the coming days, with Ukrainian-American talks planned in Switzerland. The outcome of these discussions will be crucial in determining the future trajectory of the conflict and the shape of a potential peace agreement.
The Polish Perspective
Poland’s insistence on being consulted on matters affecting its security underscores the country’s critical role as a frontline state and a key logistical hub for aid to Ukraine. The potential stationing of European fighter jets on Polish territory is a sensitive issue, reflecting concerns about regional security and the need for a coordinated defense posture.
The situation highlights the complex interplay of interests and priorities among the various stakeholders involved in the conflict. A successful resolution will require not only a commitment to diplomacy but also a willingness to address the legitimate concerns of all parties involved.
