Trump Uses Disability Slur, Sparks GOP Defection Over Redistricting
Indiana Senator Breaks With Party Over Trump’s Use of Disability Slur
A Republican state senator in Indiana has publicly announced he will vote against a proposed redistricting map, citing former President Donald Trump’s repeated use of a derogatory slur targeting people with intellectual disabilities as the deciding factor. The move by Senator Michael Bohacek represents a rare, direct rebuke of Trump within the GOP, and highlights a growing discomfort among some Republicans with the former president’s increasingly inflammatory rhetoric.
A Personal Breaking Point
The catalyst for Bohacek’s decision was a Truth Social post from Trump on Thanksgiving Day, in which the former president referred to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz using the deeply offensive “r-word.” Trump also used the post to attack Somali immigrants in Minnesota. For Bohacek, whose second daughter has Down syndrome, the language wasn’t abstract – it was a personal affront.
“Many of you have asked my position on redistricting,” Bohacek wrote on Facebook. “I have been an unapologetic advocate for people with intellectual disabilities since the birth of my second daughter. Those of you that don’t know me or my family might not know that my daughter has Down Syndrome. This is not the first time our president has used these insulting and derogatory references and his choices of words have consequences. I will be voting NO on redistricting, perhaps he can use the next 10 months to convince voters that his policies and behavior deserve a congressional majority.”
Bohacek’s wife, Melissa, echoed her husband’s sentiments in a Facebook comment, stating, “for families like ours, hearing the same mocking, derogatory language from our president isn’t abstract. He didn’t almost say or do something hurtful, he did.”
A Pattern of Ableist Rhetoric
This isn’t an isolated incident. Trump has a documented history of using ableist language and expressing harmful views about people with disabilities. In October 2024, during a private dinner with Republican donors, he reportedly used the same slur to describe then-presidential candidate Kamala Harris, as reported by The New York Times. He has also frequently used the term “intellectually disabled” as a pejorative, further demonstrating a pattern of demeaning language.
The National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) swiftly condemned Trump’s latest use of the slur, emphasizing the power of leadership language. “As the language used by our leaders carries significant weight in shaping actions and societal attitudes toward individuals with disabilities, we are dismayed and disheartened that President Trump used this harmful term in a recent social media post,” the NDSS stated.
Redistricting and the Republican Strategy
The redistricting map in Indiana is a key component of the Republican party’s strategy to maintain and expand its control in the state legislature. The proposed map is designed to create more favorable districts for Republican candidates, potentially solidifying their majority. Bohacek’s “no” vote throws a wrench into those plans, and could potentially derail the entire process.
The Indiana State House of Representatives is scheduled to discuss the map on December 1, with a Senate vote planned for December 8, according to the Indy Star. Bohacek’s decision could inspire other moderate Republicans to reconsider their support for the map, potentially leading to a stalemate.
The Wider Impact: Disability Rights and Political Discourse
Bohacek’s stand isn’t just about redistricting; it’s about the normalization of harmful language and the impact it has on vulnerable communities. The use of derogatory terms like the “r-word” perpetuates stigma and discrimination against people with intellectual disabilities, hindering their full inclusion in society.
According to the World Health Organization, over 1 billion people – approximately 15% of the world’s population – live with some form of disability. Despite this significant number, people with disabilities continue to face systemic barriers to education, employment, healthcare, and political participation. Language plays a crucial role in reinforcing or dismantling these barriers.
The incident also raises broader questions about the state of political discourse in the United States. Trump’s willingness to employ inflammatory rhetoric, even when it is deeply offensive, reflects a trend towards polarization and a decline in civility. Bohacek’s decision serves as a reminder that even within a highly partisan environment, principles and personal values can still outweigh political expediency.
This situation underscores the importance of holding leaders accountable for their words and actions, and of creating a more inclusive and respectful society for all.
