Tourist in Sri Lanka Harassed by Exhibitionist During Solo Trip
New Zealand Tourist Shares Harrowing Experience with Harassment in Sri Lanka, Sparks Debate on Solo Female Travel
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – A New Zealand woman’s solo travel adventure in Sri Lanka took a disturbing turn when she encountered an individual who exposed himself and solicited her for sex, an incident she shared on Instagram that has since gone viral and ignited a wider conversation about the safety of women traveling alone.
Molly, who documents her travels under the handle @molsgonewild, recounted the experience, initially hesitant to share it publicly. “I debated sharing this, but this is the reality of solo female travel,” she wrote to her followers.
The incident occurred while Molly was riding in a tuk-tuk. After the vehicle stopped, a man approached her, initially appearing innocuous. The situation quickly escalated when he indecently exposed himself and directly asked her for sexual contact.
“During my solo travels through Sri Lanka, a man asked for sex and exposed himself to me. It was a bit of a jarring moment, even when you feel prepared for anything,” Molly detailed in her post.
Despite her polite but firm rejection – “Of course not, no” – the man persisted, continuing to display himself and even requesting the address of her hotel. Molly ultimately chose to leave the situation, walking away without responding.
“He approached me and seemed pretty normal, like other Sri Lankans I’d met. I didn’t expect something like that to happen,” she explained.
While shaken, Molly revealed in an interview with News.com.au that this wasn’t an isolated incident. She has experienced similar harassment, even in her home country of New Zealand.
“I’ve been sexually harassed in New Zealand too,” she stated.
Molly’s experience has resonated with many, but also sparked a troubling backlash, with some online commenters blaming her for traveling solo as a woman. “A lot of victim-blaming, a lot of ‘that’s what you get’ for traveling alone as a woman,” she noted, highlighting the pervasive societal attitudes that contribute to the issue.
Swift Action by Sri Lankan Authorities
Remarkably, Molly’s ordeal didn’t end with the incident itself. After reporting the harassment to the Sri Lankan Tourism Police upon leaving the country, she received a response within 24 hours.
“They searched for the man two days later, and within five days, he was arrested,” Molly reported, praising the swift action of the authorities. The man is now facing legal proceedings.
The Broader Context of Safety for Solo Female Travelers
According to the U.S. State Department, women travelers may face unique safety risks, including sexual assault, harassment, and theft. While statistics vary by region, the department emphasizes the importance of awareness, caution, and preparation.
Molly’s story underscores the importance of these precautions. She routinely carries a pocketknife and remains vigilant about her surroundings. She also approaches interactions with men with a degree of suspicion.
Despite the challenges, Molly remains a passionate advocate for solo travel, particularly for women. “I’ve visited so many countries considered ‘unsafe’ by people, and all I’ve experienced is kindness from locals,” she concluded, emphasizing that fear shouldn’t prevent women from exploring the world.
Her experience serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by solo female travelers and the need for continued dialogue and proactive measures to ensure their safety and well-being.
