Tom Cruise & Alejandro González Iñárritu’s New Movie Unveils Title, Sets Release
Tom Cruise & Iñárritu Dig Into Dark Comedy with ‘Digger’
Hollywood is buzzing about the latest project pairing Tom Cruise with Oscar-winning director Alejandro González Iñárritu. The film, titled Digger, is slated for release on October 2, 2026, a date that holds significance for Warner Bros., as it’s the same frame that launched their blockbuster Joker in 2019. But don’t expect another brooding character study. This one, according to those involved, is aiming for laughs – albeit of a rather chaotic variety.
A Comedy of “Catastrophic Proportions”
The initial announcement, which broke on Deadline, described Digger as “a comedy of catastrophic proportions.” Iñárritu himself elaborated on the project during an appearance at the Cannes Film Festival, stating, “It’s insane. He makes me laugh every day. The range that I discovered working with Tom is unprecedented for me as a director. I was so fu*king impressed and happy.”
While details remain scarce, early buzz suggested the film centers around a powerful global figure attempting to portray themselves as a savior. Iñárritu quickly dispelled that specific narrative, emphasizing the comedic core of the project. The director, known for his visually stunning and emotionally complex films like Birdman and The Revenant, is venturing into new territory with this foray into broad comedy.
Iñárritu’s Return and Cruise’s Continued Reign
Digger marks Iñárritu’s first feature film since 2022’s Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, a deeply personal and visually ambitious film released on Netflix. Before that, the Mexico City-born filmmaker cemented his place in cinematic history with the back-to-back Oscar wins for The Revenant (2015) and Birdman (2016). His work consistently pushes boundaries, both technically and narratively, and his collaboration with Cruise promises a unique cinematic experience.
For Cruise, Digger continues a remarkable run of box office success. Despite the challenges facing the film industry, Cruise remains one of the few consistently reliable stars capable of drawing audiences to theaters. His commitment to practical effects and large-scale spectacle, as seen in the Mission: Impossible franchise, has become a hallmark of his career. The actor’s willingness to embrace a comedic role under Iñárritu’s direction signals a desire to explore new facets of his talent.
A Crowded Release Date and the Future of Blockbusters
The October 2, 2026, release date isn’t without competition. Amazon MGM Studios is also planning to release Verity, a film adaptation of the popular Colleen Hoover novel starring Dakota Johnson and Anne Hathaway, on the same day. This sets the stage for a potential box office showdown between two very different types of films.
The choice of this date is particularly interesting given the success of Joker in 2019. That film, a dark and gritty origin story, grossed over $1 billion worldwide, proving that audiences are willing to embrace unconventional superhero narratives. The success of Joker also highlighted the importance of counter-programming – releasing a film that offers a different experience than the prevailing trends.
The global box office has seen a fluctuating recovery since the pandemic, with worldwide box office revenue reaching $33.9 billion in 2023, according to Statista. However, the industry continues to grapple with changing consumer habits and the rise of streaming services. The success of films like Barbie and Oppenheimer in 2023 demonstrated that theatrical experiences can still thrive, but only if they offer something truly compelling.
The Shovel and the Spectacle: First Looks at ‘Digger’
Early glimpses of Digger, shared on social media, show Cruise in a decidedly unglamorous state. Images depict him in cowboy boots, dancing with a shovel in what appears to be a rundown Los Angeles apartment, and wandering on a pier, looking somewhat disheveled. These images suggest a character far removed from the polished agents and daring stuntmen he’s known for. The contrast between Cruise’s established persona and the apparent character in Digger is part of what makes the project so intriguing.
The film’s premise and Iñárritu’s involvement suggest a potentially subversive take on celebrity culture and the pursuit of power. In a world increasingly obsessed with image and influence, Digger could offer a darkly comedic commentary on the lengths people will go to maintain a facade of control. Whether it lives up to the hype remains to be seen, but the combination of Cruise’s star power and Iñárritu’s visionary direction makes Digger one of the most anticipated films of 2026.

González Iñárritu told us at Cannes in response to that, “No, the thing that I can tell you. This is a wild comedy of catastrophic proportions. It’s insane. He makes me laugh every day. The range that I discovered working with Tom is unprecedented for me as a director. I was so fu*king impressed and happy.”
Digger is González Iñárritu’s first movie since directing 2022’s Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths for Netflix. The Mexico-born filmmaker won the Academy Award for Best Director for the 2015 Leonardo DiCaprio western The Revenant and three Oscars for Best Picture, Directing and Original Screenplay for 2016’s Birdman, starring Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Ed Norton and Zach Galifianakis.
The teaser shows Cruise in cowboy boots dancing with a shovel in what looks to be a Los Angeles type of low-rent apartment, as well as on a pier. He appears to be a bit disheveled.
Also opening on Oct. 2 next year is Amazon MGM Studios Verity, the feature take of the Colleen Hoover novel starring Dakota Johnson and Anne Hathaway, directed by Michael Showalter.
