Sweden Invests Billions in Northern Grid to Power Green Industrial Shift
<p><strong>LULEÅ, Sweden —</strong> Sweden's national grid operator, Svenska kraftnät, has committed nearly two billion Swedish kronor (approximately $185 million USD) to construct two new 400 kV power lines and a state-of-the-art substation in Luleå. This significant investment is designed to provide the crucial electricity needed for a transformative green industrial expansion in northern Sweden, bolstering the nation's ambitious climate goals.</p>
<p>The new infrastructure, stretching roughly 30 kilometers between the Svartbyn station in Boden and the new Hällmyran station in Luleå, is a direct response to the escalating power demands from the Luleå industrial park and, critically, SSAB's planned shift to fossil-free steel production.</p>
<p>"With these investments, we are securing the access to the electricity required for industrial ventures in Luleå for the foreseeable future," said Daniel Gustafsson, Head of Power System Department at Svenska kraftnät. The move underscores Sweden's strategic commitment to decarbonizing heavy industry and positioning itself at the forefront of the global green transition.</p>
<h2>Fueling a Green Revolution in Steel and Mining</h2>
<p>At the heart of Luleå's industrial transformation is SSAB, the Swedish steel giant. Its planned transition from coal-based production to an electric arc furnace steel mill is projected to slash carbon dioxide emissions from steel manufacturing by approximately 90 percent. This monumental shift not only redefines the future of steel production but also significantly contributes to Sweden's national and European Union climate targets.</p>
<p>Concurrently, mining company LKAB plans a facility within the Luleå industrial park dedicated to recovering phosphorus and rare earth metals from mining waste, utilizing entirely fossil-free processes. <p>"So far, we are maintaining good momentum in the lead-time reduction projects," noted Maria Jalvemo, program manager for the Region North investment program at Svenska kraftnät.</p>

<p>Beyond meeting immediate industrial needs, the new Hällmyran station is strategically designed to serve as a future connection point for new electricity generation, including potential offshore wind farms. <p>The Svartbyn–Hällmyran project, which officially began in 2022, is a cornerstone of Svenska kraftnät's goal to halve the lead times for new energy infrastructure. Construction of the Hällmyran station is slated for the first half of 2026, with work on the power lines commencing in the latter half of the same year. The ambitious target is to have the entire system operational by the summer of 2029.</p>
