Sosnowiec Priest Jacek K: Sex Abuse Charges & Church Cover-Up
Polish Diocese Rocked by Abuse Allegations, Internal Investigations
A cloud of scandal hangs over the Diocese of Sosnowiec in Poland, as a series of investigations have uncovered disturbing allegations of sexual abuse and misconduct involving multiple members of the clergy. The unfolding crisis has prompted calls for greater transparency, accountability, and a fundamental shift in how the Church addresses these sensitive issues.
From Whispers to Investigations: The Unraveling of a System
The current wave of scrutiny began following a tragic incident in March 2023, when a priest, Robert Sz., murdered a deacon, Mateusz B., before taking his own life. Sz. left behind a notebook containing the names of several other priests and notes referencing alleged sexual misconduct. This discovery triggered a formal investigation by Sosnowiec prosecutors.
The investigation quickly focused on Father Jacek K., a priest who had been quietly transferred between parishes for years, leaving a trail of unanswered questions and hushed accusations in his wake. Despite reports from parishioners, the diocese had consistently avoided involving law enforcement, instead opting to move K. to different assignments, often in remote areas.
Shocking Evidence Uncovered in Priest’s Residence
In October 2024, Father Jacek K. was arrested. A search of his residence in Mostek revealed deeply disturbing evidence, including pornography involving children, sexually explicit images of teenagers, and indications of planned meetings with young people.
As of December 5th, prosecutors have filed 10 charges against K., including rape, sexual assault, and sexual contact with girls under the age of 15. Crucially, due to Polish law, these crimes do not have a statute of limitations, meaning victims can still seek justice decades later.
“The accused exploited the trust and deep faith of his victims. He targeted individuals who were vulnerable, lost, and struggling to find their place in the world,” explained prosecutor Bartosz Kilian during a press conference.
The prosecution’s case is bolstered by extensive evidence, including testimony from dozens of witnesses, documents seized from the Sosnowiec Curia, medical records, educational materials, and forensic analyses – including genetic, psychological, and psychiatric evaluations.
A Pattern of Misconduct and Cover-Ups
The case of Father Jacek K. is not isolated. The Sosnowiec diocese has been grappling with a series of scandals in recent years. In January 2025, Father Tomasz Z. was laicized (removed from the priesthood) following revelations of his involvement in an orgy at a parish residence.
Another priest, Father Krystian K., is currently facing both criminal and canonical proceedings. He is accused of causing the death of a 21-year-old man after allegedly administering a date rape drug and other narcotics. Further investigation led to a separate investigation into drug possession, prompting a plea from the bishop for Krystian K. to seek addiction treatment.
The Diocese Responds, Promises Reform
Dominika Bem, a spokesperson for the Sosnowiec diocese, stated that Father Jacek K. was immediately removed from his duties upon the emergence of the initial allegations. She affirmed the diocese’s full cooperation with law enforcement and announced the completion of a preliminary canonical investigation, with the case now being referred to the Holy See.
“The diocese has taken all actions required by canon law, and the further course of the matter rests with the Apostolic See,” Bem stated in a press release.
In response to the growing crisis, the diocese has established an Independent Commission for Clarification and Reparation, tasked with investigating all sensitive cases involving clergy. A prevention team and a delegation for the protection of children and youth have also been created.
The diocese is urging anyone with information about abuse or misconduct to come forward, assuring victims that their concerns will be taken seriously and that they will receive spiritual, psychological, and material support.
A Wider Crisis in the Polish Church?
The scandals in Sosnowiec reflect a broader reckoning within the Catholic Church in Poland, where allegations of abuse and cover-ups have been steadily mounting. According to a 2022 report by the Polish Bishops’ Conference, there have been over 400 reported cases of sexual abuse by clergy since 1990, though experts believe the actual number is likely much higher.
The ongoing investigations and the growing public outcry are putting immense pressure on the Church to address the root causes of these problems and to implement meaningful reforms to protect vulnerable individuals and restore trust.
