Soler to Ajax: River Misses Out on Promising Left-Back
River Plate Misses Out on Promising Young Defender, Julio Soler Heads to Ajax
Buenos Aires – The pursuit of Julio Soler, the talented young Argentinian left-back currently with Bournemouth, has ended in disappointment for River Plate, as the player is poised to join Dutch giants Ajax. Despite strong interest from Los Millonarios and manager Marcelo Gallardo, Soler will continue his European journey in Amsterdam.
The 20-year-old, who rose through the ranks at Lanús and captained Argentina’s Under-20 squad at the 2025 FIFA World Cup, has reportedly given his approval to the move to Ajax. The deal is expected to be a loan, offering Soler valuable playing time in a top European league.
According to journalist Matteo Moretto, Ajax moved decisively to secure Soler’s signature, presenting a more compelling opportunity than those available in Argentina. The Eredivisie club had previously expressed interest in Soler while he was still at Lanús, prior to his transfer to the Premier League.
River Plate had submitted a loan offer with an option to buy, but the competition from established European clubs proved too strong. Werder Bremen (Germany) and Udinese (Italy) also registered their interest, but Ajax’s consistent pursuit ultimately won out. Bournemouth, seemingly prioritizing continued European exposure for the player, favored the Dutch option.
Gallardo had identified Soler as a key target to fill the left-back position, particularly after a potential deal for Román Vega fell through due to Zenit St. Petersburg’s unwillingness to negotiate below a €9 million valuation. The pursuit of Soler underscored River Plate’s ambition to bolster their squad with young, promising talent.
Despite missing out on Soler, River Plate remains active in the transfer market. Negotiations are reportedly nearing completion with Atlético Mineiro for midfielder Fausto Vera, with the player himself reportedly keen on a return to Argentina. “It’s true that he would like to return to Argentina,” revealed Vera’s representative, Marcelo Trapasso.
Furthermore, River Plate is also exploring a potential move for Santiano Andino from Godoy Cruz, signaling a proactive approach to strengthening their attacking options.

Soler’s move to Ajax represents a significant step in his career, offering him the platform to develop his skills and gain valuable experience in one of Europe’s most respected footballing environments. The Eredivisie is renowned for its focus on youth development, making it an ideal destination for the young Argentinian.
The broader impact: The increasing trend of young South American players opting for European clubs highlights the growing disparity in financial resources between the two continents. While River Plate and other Argentinian clubs are keen to retain their top talent, the lure of higher wages and greater exposure in Europe often proves irresistible. This trend poses a challenge to the long-term competitiveness of South American football, requiring innovative strategies to retain and develop its brightest prospects.
