Serious Car Accident: 2 Young People Injured in Schijndel – Mist Suspected
Four Young People Injured in Dense Fog Crash in Netherlands
Schijndel, Netherlands – A serious traffic accident in the early hours of Saturday left four young people injured after a car veered off the road and collided with a tree on the Steeg, between Heeswijk-Dinther and Schijndel. Authorities believe extremely dense fog played a significant role in the incident.
The crash occurred around 2:15 AM, with visibility severely limited by the weather conditions. The vehicle, carrying four individuals, was traveling from Heeswijk-Dinther when it left the roadway, entered the roadside ditch, and struck a tree.
Two of the passengers, an 18-year-old from Veghel and a 17-year-old from Uden, were able to extricate themselves from the vehicle and were transported to a hospital for evaluation. However, two others – a 17-year-old from Venlo and an 18-year-old from Sint-Oedenrode – required a lengthy and complex rescue operation conducted by the fire department.
Firefighters spent nearly an hour and a half carefully freeing one of the trapped individuals. The car was initially secured with a winch and pulled back onto its wheels before rescuers could safely access the passenger. The severity of the vehicle’s damage necessitated the prolonged effort.
All four injured individuals have been transported to hospitals in Uden, Den Bosch, and the Radboudumc in Nijmegen for treatment. The incident prompted a significant emergency response, with five ambulances and two trauma helicopters dispatched to the scene. Unfortunately, the dense fog prevented the helicopters from taking flight, forcing a trauma team to travel by road.
“The conditions were incredibly challenging,” stated a spokesperson for the local emergency services. “The fog was so thick it was difficult to see even a few feet in front of you. Our priority was to safely extricate the injured and get them to definitive care as quickly as possible.”
The Steeg was closed to all traffic for several hours following the accident, causing significant disruption. A recovery operation was undertaken to remove the damaged vehicle and a partially fallen tree that the car impacted.
Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, including whether alcohol or drug use may have been a contributing factor.
The Rising Toll of Fog-Related Accidents
According to data from the European Road Safety Council, fog contributes to approximately 0.5% of all road accidents, but these accidents tend to be more severe due to reduced visibility and increased stopping distances. The Netherlands, with its low-lying geography and frequent maritime influences, is particularly susceptible to dense fog conditions, especially during the autumn and winter months.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of driving in reduced visibility. Authorities urge drivers to exercise extreme caution, reduce speed, and increase following distances when encountering foggy conditions.
The ages of all the injured have not yet been officially released.
