Russian Drones Briefly Enter Romanian, Moldovan Airspace, Triggering NATO Scramble
NATO Scrambles Jets as Russian Drone Briefly Enters Romanian and Moldovan Airspace
A Russian drone briefly penetrated Romanian and Moldovan airspace early Wednesday, prompting NATO to scramble fighter jets in a tense incident near Ukraine’s border. The drone’s flight path, lasting approximately 12 minutes, triggered air alerts in Romania’s Tulcea and Galați counties.
The Romanian Ministry of Defense confirmed that four allied fighter jets, two German Eurofighters based at Mihail Kogălniceanu airbase and two Romanian F-16s, were dispatched to monitor the situation. While the jets had authorization to engage, the decision was made not to shoot down the drone due to its intermittent radar signal.
“We have reinforced air police on duty. They took off to monitor the air situation on the border with Ukraine due to Russian air attacks near the river border with Romania,” the ministry stated, according to Digi24.
The drone was reportedly tracked flying from Colibași in Moldova towards Foltești in Romania, and then back into Moldova towards Oancea. While the origin of the drone was not officially specified, officials suggest it likely launched from occupied Ukrainian territory, given its proximity to Russian attacks on the Ukrainian border.
This incident follows closely on the heels of Romania’s evacuation of the village of Plauru, situated just across the Danube River from the Ukrainian port city of Izmail. The evacuation was a precautionary measure after Russia targeted Izmail, causing a fire on a liquefied gas tanker. Residents were able to return to their homes following the incident.
The repeated incursions of drones and the proximity of military actions to NATO borders underscore the heightened geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe. Continuous surveillance and rapid response capabilities are crucial for maintaining regional security and preventing potential escalation.
