Romanian Villages Evacuated After Russian Attack on Ukraine
Russian Drone Strike Forces Evacuations in Romanian Border Villages
Two small Romanian villages along the Danube River were evacuated Monday following a Russian drone attack in neighboring Ukraine that ignited a fire on a Turkish-flagged gas tanker. The 16 crew members aboard the vessel, carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), were safely rescued, according to Turkey’s Directorate General of Maritime Affairs.
In Plauru, a hamlet directly facing Ukraine’s Izmail port in the Odesa region, between 100 and 150 residents were moved as a precautionary measure due to the proximity of the blaze. Rescue services also ordered the evacuation of Ceatalchioi, a nearby village with fewer than 300 inhabitants, using minibuses. This marks the first instance of a village evacuation in Romania stemming from a Russian attack within Ukraine. Authorities cited the imminent risk of explosion for these actions.
Road and maritime traffic in the area has been suspended. Romania’s Ministry of National Defence reported no detection of airspace violations following the overnight strike in Ukraine, which targeted the Danube river port of Izmail. The port is a critical hub for Ukrainian imports and exports, particularly for energy resources.
The attack on Izmail occurred just a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed an agreement to potentially import U.S. liquefied natural gas through the region. Russia’s continued targeting of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure underscores Zelenskyy’s efforts to secure vital energy supplies for the approaching winter, highlighting the broader geopolitical implications for regional stability and energy security.
