Postman CEO: Scaling Engineering & AI-Powered APIs | Leaders of Code
Postman Scales from Side Project to API Cornerstone, Navigating AI’s Rising Tide
SAN FRANCISCO – From a frustrated developer’s side hustle to a foundational tool for millions, Postman’s journey exemplifies the power of solving a clear pain point in the rapidly evolving world of software development. The API platform, now boasting over 400 engineers, is not only scaling its own operations but is also positioning itself as a critical enabler of the artificial intelligence revolution, according to recent insights shared by CEO and co-founder Abhinav Asthana.
The Accidental Startup: From Yahoo Intern to Industry Leader
Asthana’s story began during a 2009 internship at Yahoo, where he repeatedly encountered the challenges of unreliable APIs and fragmented documentation. This frustration spurred the initial development of Postman as a personal tool, later released as a Chrome Web Store extension. “Everything I tried at the time was very complicated, very cluttered, very enterprise-y,” Asthana explained in a recent interview with Stack Overflow’s Senior Director of Engineering, Ben Matthews. “I wanted something that was really like a tool for developers like me.”
The platform’s early success hinged on its collaborative features, allowing developers to easily share API collections and eliminate the common refrain of “it works on my machine.” This focus on teamwork proved pivotal, transforming Postman from a personal utility into a shared resource for engineering teams. The transition to a sustainable business model involved experimenting with open-source donations, sponsorships, and in-app purchases before ultimately settling on a subscription-based model targeted at businesses. “When managers and businesses started asking for this capability, that’s when we learned there was a business model here,” Asthana noted.
Engineering Growth & The Collaboration Bottleneck
Scaling from three founders to a team exceeding 400 presented significant challenges. Asthana candidly admitted early missteps in architectural design, stemming from the founders’ individual coding styles. “We had this insight that if you’re building an API and you are the only one using it, then it’s not going to survive for long,” he said. However, reconciling those initial approaches required later refactoring and a concerted effort to establish clear APIs and communication protocols.
The company initially maintained a lean structure, with around 30 engineers for several years. However, the demands of enterprise clients and the need for greater scalability and reliability necessitated a more substantial investment in engineering resources. Today, Postman’s engineering department comprises approximately 350-400 individuals, requiring a shift in communication strategies and a renewed focus on shared goals. “Making sure that people were focused on a singular goal was very effective,” Asthana stated, emphasizing the importance of aligning teams around a common vision.
AI as a Force Multiplier: From Feedback Aggregation to Agentic APIs
Postman is increasingly leveraging artificial intelligence to address the challenges of scale and enhance developer productivity. A key innovation is the deployment of AI agents to aggregate and summarize developer feedback from various sources, including public issue trackers, support channels, and customer conversations. This allows Postman’s engineering teams to quickly identify and prioritize the most pressing issues, streamlining the development process.
However, the most significant impact of AI, according to Asthana, lies in its potential to unlock the true power of APIs. “APIs are essential for useful, working AI,” he explained. “LLMs can tell you a lot of things, but it’s only when you connect them with APIs they become real agents.” Postman is actively developing tools to facilitate this connection, enabling developers to build agentic applications that can interact with real-world data and workflows. This is particularly evident in the company’s work with MCP (Machine Communication Protocol), allowing developers to create APIs from existing services and integrate them with AI agents.
The Future of APIs: Context, Trust, and Adaptive Interfaces
Looking ahead, Asthana anticipates a shift towards more conversational APIs and adaptive user interfaces. “UIs that cannot change when you tell them to will look archaic,” he predicted. He also emphasized the growing importance of trust and authenticity in an increasingly AI-driven world. As AI becomes more pervasive, verifying the source and integrity of data will be paramount.
The rise of AI is also reshaping the role of the developer. Asthana believes that the focus is shifting from writing code to evaluating code, with AI handling much of the rote coding tasks. This transition will require developers to develop new skills, such as prompt engineering and AI model evaluation. According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2023, AI and machine learning specialists are among the fastest-growing job roles, with a projected growth of 30% globally by 2028.
Postman’s evolution reflects a broader trend in the software industry: the increasing importance of APIs as the building blocks of modern applications. As AI continues to advance, platforms like Postman will play an increasingly critical role in connecting AI agents to the real world, enabling a new generation of intelligent applications. The company’s success underscores the value of identifying and solving a fundamental pain point for developers, and adapting to the ever-changing landscape of technology.
Economic Context: The global API management market is projected to reach USD 7.98 billion by 2030, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 24.8% from 2023 to 2030, driven by the increasing adoption of digital transformation initiatives and the proliferation of microservices architectures.
