A Houston Voice Retires: Melanie Lawson Steps Down After 43 Years at the Anchor Desk
After more than four decades shaping the news landscape of Houston, Texas, veteran journalist Melanie Lawson is retiring from ABC13 in January. Her departure marks the end of an era for the station and for a community that has come to rely on her steady presence and insightful reporting.
Lawson’s career began in 1980, and she quickly became a fixture in Houston homes, anchoring flagship broadcasts like Live at 5 and Eyewitness News at 11 a.m. But her impact extends far beyond simply delivering headlines. Lawson’s reporting has consistently focused on the human stories within the news, a commitment that has earned her widespread respect and a devoted audience.
From Local Roots to Global Stories
Born and raised in Houston, Lawson’s connection to the city is deeply personal. This local grounding informed her approach to journalism, allowing her to connect with viewers on a uniquely relatable level. Yet, her reporting wasn’t confined by geographical boundaries. Lawson has traveled the world, bringing international events into sharp focus for a Houston audience.
Her assignments have taken her to Cuba, Panama, Australia, Sudan, and South Africa, offering viewers perspectives often missing from mainstream news coverage. She didn’t just report on global events; she sought to understand their impact on the lives of people back home. This commitment to contextualizing global issues for a local audience is a hallmark of her career.
Lawson also chronicled the rise of cultural icons, including Beyoncé and Destiny’s Child, offering a glimpse into the creative energy that has made Houston a vibrant cultural hub. She understood the power of storytelling to connect people across different backgrounds and experiences.
A Front-Row Seat to History
Throughout her tenure, Lawson has covered pivotal moments in history, both locally and nationally. She reported on Houston’s groundbreaking elections of its first Black and female mayors, providing crucial context and analysis during periods of significant social change. She was on the ground during Hurricane Harvey in 2017, delivering vital information and offering a calming presence amidst the chaos. And she documented the devastating Texas ice storm of 2021, highlighting the resilience of the community in the face of adversity.
Her journalistic skills have also afforded her access to some of the most influential figures of our time. Lawson has interviewed four U.S. presidents – Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, and Bill Clinton – as well as Vice President Kamala Harris. She’s spoken with cultural luminaries like Maya Angelou, Aretha Franklin, and Misty Copeland, and engaged in thoughtful conversations with journalists Barbara Walters and Diane Sawyer.
Beyond the Headlines: A Champion for Community
While high-profile interviews and breaking news coverage define a portion of Lawson’s legacy, her commitment to community engagement is equally significant. She has consistently used her platform to amplify the voices of those often marginalized, focusing on stories that celebrate Houston’s diverse cultural tapestry.
Lawson has actively supported organizations like the Houston Ballet, SHAPE Community Center, and the Houston Museum of African American Culture, demonstrating a dedication to fostering a more inclusive and equitable society. She’s a member of numerous professional and civic organizations, including the Texas Lone Star Chapter of the Emmys and the Houston Association of Black Journalists, and served on the Board of Trustees at Princeton University.
According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs Population Division, urbanization rates continue to climb globally, with 56% of the world’s population living in urban areas in 2022. Lawson’s long-term commitment to covering the complexities of a growing city like Houston provides a valuable case study for understanding the challenges and opportunities of urban life.
A Legacy of Recognition and Respect
Lawson’s contributions to journalism have been widely recognized. She has received three Emmy Awards, the YWCA’s “Outstanding Women of the Year” award, and lifetime achievement awards from the Houston Press Club and Houston Community College. She’s also been honored by Women in Film and Television and the Houston Association of Black Journalists, among others.
“Melanie’s favorite stories have always been those that celebrate Houston’s rich, multi-ethnic community—especially stories about children and those quietly working to make a difference in their lives,” a station spokesperson said. This sentiment encapsulates the heart of her work: a genuine desire to uplift and empower others.
As Lawson prepares to embark on a new chapter, her legacy as a trusted voice, a dedicated journalist, and a champion for the Houston community will undoubtedly endure. ABC13 plans to celebrate her career throughout January with special tributes and retrospective stories.
