Mariah the Scientist Wants ‘Marriage’ As a ‘Commitment’
R&B Singer Mariah the Scientist Opens Up About Marriage and Family Plans
R&B vocalist Mariah the Scientist, known for her introspective lyrics and soulful sound, has publicly expressed her desire to marry her partner, rapper Young Thug, and start a family. The 28-year-old singer revealed her aspirations during a recent interview with radio personality Angie Martinez on Hot 97, signaling a new chapter in her personal life as she navigates a high-profile relationship and burgeoning career.
Navigating Love and a Blended Family
Mariah and Young Thug, 34, have been dating since 2021, coinciding with their musical collaboration on the track “Walked In.” Their relationship has faced public scrutiny, including a brief split earlier this year, but the couple reconciled in October. A significant aspect of Mariah’s relationship with Young Thug involves his six children. Initially hesitant about dating a father, Mariah shared with Hot 97’s Nessa Diab in August that having a partner with children was a “dealbreaker” for her previously.
However, Mariah has embraced her role as a positive influence in the children’s lives, describing close relationships with them. “I feel like we have great relationships,” she told Diab. “I feel like we talk on the phone all day long. They be calling me before they call him and I’m like, ‘Call your daddy.’” This dynamic highlights the complexities of modern blended families and the evolving definitions of parental roles.
Beyond Obligation: A Desire for Love-Based Commitment
What’s particularly striking about Mariah’s statements is her emphasis on the *why* behind her desire for marriage. She isn’t seeking a commitment born out of necessity, such as the arrival of a child, but rather one rooted in genuine affection. “I just want a commitment that doesn’t involve an obligation to a baby,” Mariah explained to Martinez. “I just want it to be out of love, not out of responsibility.”
This sentiment reflects a broader trend in contemporary relationships, where individuals are prioritizing emotional fulfillment and intentionality over traditional societal expectations. According to a 2023 United Nations report on global marriage patterns, there’s a noticeable shift towards later marriages and a greater emphasis on relationship quality, particularly among younger generations. The report notes that globally, the median age at first marriage has increased by nearly two years since 1990, indicating a more deliberate approach to long-term commitment.
The Evolving Landscape of Family Formation
Mariah also expressed her desire to have “at least one” child, acknowledging the potential challenges of balancing motherhood with her career. This ambition comes at a time when societal norms surrounding family formation are rapidly changing. The rise of single-parent households, same-sex parenting, and delayed parenthood are all contributing to a more diverse and fluid understanding of what constitutes a family.
The U.S. Census Bureau data from 2023 reveals that approximately 23% of children under 18 live in single-parent households, a figure that has steadily increased over the past several decades. This statistic underscores the growing prevalence of alternative family structures and the need for societal support systems that cater to diverse family needs.
A Public Life, Personal Aspirations
Mariah the Scientist’s openness about her personal life is a testament to the increasing transparency expected of public figures. Her willingness to discuss her relationship, her evolving views on family, and her desire for a love-based commitment resonates with a generation that values authenticity and vulnerability.
As she continues to navigate her career and personal life, Mariah’s story offers a glimpse into the complexities of modern relationships and the evolving landscape of family formation. Her perspective, shared so candidly, provides a relatable narrative for many who are grappling with similar questions about love, commitment, and the future.
