Louisiana Jail Escape: Inmate Captured, 1 Dead, 1 Still at Large
Louisiana Jailbreak: One Inmate Captured, Another Dead, Search Continues for Third Escapee
PORT BARRE, Louisiana – A desperate search is underway in southwestern Louisiana for Keith Eli, 24, one of three inmates who escaped from the St. Landry Parish Jail early Wednesday. The breakout, which involved a painstakingly crafted breach of the jail’s structure, has already taken a tragic turn with the death by suicide of one escapee, Jonathan Harrington, and the capture of another, Jonathan Joseph.
A Calculated Breach and a Desperate Pursuit
The escape unfolded after the inmates managed to compromise a section of the jail’s upper wall, meticulously removing mortar and concrete blocks over an unspecified period. According to Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz, the trio then utilized bedsheets and other materials to scale the exterior wall, access a first-floor roof, and descend to the ground. The ingenuity of the escape has prompted an internal investigation, though officials admit similar breaches haven’t occurred in recent memory.
“These three were just a little more creative than in years past,” Major Mark LeBlanc, a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Department, told reporters. He added that residents should secure their homes and vehicles, and warned against approaching any individuals suspected of aiding the escapees, promising prosecution for those involved.
Jonathan Joseph, 24, was apprehended without incident, according to KLFY, a CBS affiliate. He faces charges including being a principal to first-degree rape and was recently arrested in connection with a drive-by shooting. The capture of Joseph offers a small measure of relief, but the focus remains firmly on locating Eli, who is wanted for attempted second-degree murder.
The situation took a grim turn Thursday when Jonathan Harrington, 26, facing multiple felony charges including home invasion, was recognized by a tipster while riding a black e-bike. As law enforcement attempted to secure the scene, Harrington fatally shot himself with a hunting rifle. Port Barre Police Chief Deon Boudreaux confirmed the incident to Crime, indictment, louisiana, prison
