Linköping: Pappa dömd efter dödsolycka i Stångån
Father Convicted After Car Plunges into Swedish River, Wife and Daughter Die
Linköping, Sweden – A Swedish man has been found guilty of manslaughter following a tragic incident last August in which his car rolled backwards into the Stångån river, claiming the lives of his wife and young daughter. The man, who has not been publicly named, was temporarily parked on a prohibited vändplats (turning area) while unloading items, including a stroller, from the vehicle.

A Moment’s Inattention, A Lifetime of Grief
According to court documents, the father did not engage the handbrake or put the car in gear before exiting the vehicle. As he unloaded, the car began to roll backwards, ultimately entering the river with his wife and two children still inside. He managed to rescue his son, but was unable to save his wife and daughter.
The tragedy underscores the critical importance of always securing a vehicle, even for short stops. According to the Swedish Transport Agency (Trafikverket), approximately 1,500 vehicle rollaway incidents are reported annually in Sweden, though fatalities are thankfully rare. These incidents often result from negligence, such as failing to engage the parking brake or leaving the vehicle in neutral.
Court Ruling and Considerations
The Linköping District Court determined the father was responsible for the accident, issuing a conditional sentence. Prosecutors argued he demonstrated a clear lack of caution by parking in a prohibited area and failing to secure the vehicle. However, the court acquitted him of charges related to endangering his son, finding his actions did not constitute gross negligence in that instance.
“This was not a case of deliberate risk-taking,” the court stated in its ruling.
Charlotte Lindsäter, the father’s defense attorney, described the verdict as a “hard blow” for her client. “We are, however, positive that the court dismissed the charge concerning the offense against his son. It is also positive that the court took into account both that my client intervened and tried to save his family and that he has suffered greatly from the event,” she said in a statement.
The father is currently considering whether to appeal the decision.
The Ripple Effect of Tragedy
The mother and daughter were pulled from the river by emergency services, but despite extensive efforts, the daughter succumbed to her injuries after more than two months in hospital. The mother died shortly after the initial rescue attempt.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences that can arise from even momentary lapses in judgment. It highlights the need for constant vigilance when operating a vehicle and the importance of adhering to all safety regulations.
