Lidocaine Shows Promise in Reducing Long Covid Symptoms: New Study
Lidocaine Injections Offer Hope for Long Covid Sufferers, Early Study Suggests
Amsterdam – A novel approach using the common anesthetic lidocaine is showing promising results in alleviating debilitating symptoms of long Covid, according to a recent study. While researchers caution that larger, controlled trials are needed, early findings suggest the treatment could significantly improve the quality of life for those grappling with persistent health issues following a Covid-19 infection.
The study, published in the journal eClinical Medicine, observed patients receiving lidocaine injections and reported improvements ranging from modest symptom reduction to complete remission. Researchers at Excellent Care Clinics, a pain clinic in Velsen-Noord, Netherlands, initially discovered the potential benefit while treating patients with neuropathic pain who also happened to be experiencing long Covid symptoms.
A Wide Range of Symptoms Addressed
Long Covid, also known as post-Covid condition, affects an estimated 100,000 people in the Netherlands alone, with around 400,000 reporting ongoing symptoms. Currently, there are no officially approved treatments for the condition, leaving many patients searching for relief. The study focused on 30 common long Covid complaints, including nerve pain, brain fog, post-exertional malaise (PEM), and overwhelming fatigue. Researchers found 28 of those 30 symptoms showed improvement in the patients studied.
“We saw improvements varying from small steps forward to a complete disappearance of the symptoms associated with long Covid,” said lead researcher Wendy Scholten-Peeters, professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The study included patients with varying degrees of severity, some of whom were bedridden for up to 20 hours a day. On average, participants had been experiencing long Covid symptoms for 2.5 years.
“The Fog Lifted” – Patient Shares Experience
Documentary filmmaker Jessica Villerius is among those who experienced positive effects from the treatment. Sharing her story on Instagram, Villerius described regaining a significant portion of her life after “four miserable years” battling long Covid.
