Laura Dahlmeier: DSV Names Award After Late Biathlete
Laura Dahlmeier’s Legacy to Live On Through New German Ski Federation Award
Munich, Germany – The German Ski Federation (DSV) will establish an annual award in memory of Laura Dahlmeier, the Olympic biathlon champion who tragically died in a climbing accident in Pakistan earlier this year. The award, announced today, aims to recognize and support promising young athletes across all DSV disciplines.
Dahlmeier, 33, died on July 28th while climbing Laila Peak in the Pakistani mountains. Her sudden passing sent shockwaves through the sporting world, and the DSV has been carefully considering how to best honor her memory.
A Broad Recognition
“We deliberately took our time to consider how we could honor Laura in a dignified way, both as an exceptional athlete and, above all, as a special person,” said DSV Executive Director Stefan Schwarzbach in a statement. “This award is a testament to her spirit and her impact on German sport.”
Unlike many athlete-specific awards, the Laura Dahlmeier Prize will be open to athletes from all DSV disciplines – not just biathlon. This inclusive approach reflects Dahlmeier’s broad appeal and the DSV’s desire to support the next generation of German sporting talent across the board.
“It was important to us, and we discussed this with Laura’s parents, that the award be open to all disciplines,” Schwarzbach explained. “They wholeheartedly support this idea.”
Beyond Biathlon: A Lasting Impact
Dahlmeier’s achievements extended beyond her Olympic gold in the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Games and her seven World Championship titles. She remained a visible presence in the biathlon community after retiring from competition, frequently appearing as a television expert and commentator.
Schwarzbach acknowledged the continued grief felt by those who knew Dahlmeier. “Even though almost six months have passed, it is still very difficult for all of us to accept that we will not see Laura this winter. She was also present at many Biathlon World Cups as a TV expert after the end of her career. The coming weeks will certainly be emotional for most of us, because we associate many of these places very closely with memories of Laura and with shared experiences.”
The DSV hopes the Laura Dahlmeier Prize will serve as a lasting tribute to an athlete who inspired a nation and embodied the values of dedication, sportsmanship, and a passion for excellence. The first award is scheduled to be presented in 2026.
