KH Zulfa Mustofa Named PBNU Interim Chair, Muktamar Planned Before Eid al-Adha
Nahdlatul Ulama Appoints New Interim Leader Amidst Calls for Unity
Jakarta – In a move signaling a new chapter for Indonesia’s largest Islamic organization, KH Zulfa Mustofa has been named interim Chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) ‘Kelompok Sultan’ faction. The appointment, made Tuesday following a plenary meeting in Jakarta, comes as the organization prepares for its 35th Muktamar, or congress, a pivotal event for charting its future direction.
A Smooth Transition, A Focus on Unity
Professor M. Nuh, a member of the PBNU’s Syuriyah Council, announced the decision, emphasizing the need for a seamless transition. “The appointment of KH Zulfa Mustofa as interim Chairman will allow him to lead PBNU and carry out its duties until the Muktamar,” he stated during a press conference.
The timing of the 35th Muktamar is being adjusted to align with the organization’s traditional cycle. Professor Nuh explained that the previous congress in Lampung was held at the latest permissible date, necessitating a return to the customary schedule – before the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha.
KH Zulfa Mustofa himself addressed the assembly, pledging to honor the trust placed in him and to steer the organization towards a more unified future. “I do not want to be part of past conflicts,” he declared. “I want to be a solution for this organization. I invite all members of Nahdlatul Ulama to come together again in this great house.”
Acknowledging Past Leadership, Looking Ahead
The appointment follows consideration of two candidates, KH Zulfa Mustofa and Professor Nizar Ali. The decision also included a formal expression of gratitude to outgoing Chairman KH Yahya Cholil Staquf, known as Gus Yahya, for his four years of service. Rais Aam PBNU, KH Miftachul Akhyar, praised Gus Yahya’s contributions, stating, “Thank you to KH Yahya Cholil Staquf for sharing his thoughts for the past four years. We remain brothers. Hopefully, there will be improvements for the upcoming Muktamar.”
The Significance of Nahdlatul Ulama
With over 50 million members, Nahdlatul Ulama plays a crucial role in Indonesian society. Founded in 1926, the organization is renowned for its moderate interpretation of Islam and its commitment to promoting education, social welfare, and national unity. Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation, relies on organizations like Nahdlatul Ulama to foster religious harmony and counter extremism. According to a 2023 Pew Research Center study, approximately 60% of Indonesian Muslims identify with moderate Islamic views, a figure significantly influenced by the teachings and outreach of groups like NU.
The upcoming Muktamar will be a critical juncture for the organization, as it navigates evolving social and political landscapes and seeks to reaffirm its position as a leading voice for moderate Islam in the 21st century.
