HPE and Juniper Networks Target AI Infrastructure Boom with New Networking Gear
NEW YORK – December 18, 2025 – Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) is making a significant push into the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure market, partnering with Juniper Networks to deliver a suite of networking solutions designed to handle the demands of AI workloads at the edge and within the data center. The collaboration aims to capitalize on the projected exponential growth of the AI sector, which is expected to contribute over $1.8 trillion to the global economy by 2030, according to PwC.
The Edge Gets an AI Boost: Introducing the MX301
A key component of this strategy is the launch of the MX301, a new 1U multiservice edge router. Available immediately, the MX301 is specifically engineered to facilitate AI inferencing closer to the source of data generation. This is crucial as businesses increasingly seek to process data in real-time, reducing latency and improving responsiveness. The router boasts impressive connectivity options, supporting 16 x 1/1025/50GbE, 10 x 100Gb, and 4 x 400Gb interfaces, providing ample bandwidth for demanding applications.
“The MX301 acts as the critical on-ramp, providing high-speed, secure connections from distributed inference clusters – the users, devices, and agents at the edge – all the way back to the central AI data center,” explained Rami Rahim, executive vice president and general manager of Juniper Networks’ Networking Platforms Business. “The requirements at the edge aren’t just about raw performance; they also demand high logical scalability and robust, integrated security features.” This emphasis on security is particularly relevant given the increasing scrutiny surrounding data privacy and the potential for cyberattacks targeting AI systems. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) AI Risk Management Framework highlights the importance of secure AI systems, and solutions like the MX301 are positioned to address these concerns.
Powering the AI Core: The QFX5250 Switch
While the MX301 focuses on the edge, HPE and Juniper are also addressing the needs of the core data center with the QFX5250 switch, slated for release in the first quarter of 2026. This fully liquid-cooled switch is designed to seamlessly integrate with the latest generation of GPUs from Nvidia, including the Rubin architecture, and AMD’s MI400 series. Built on Broadcom Tomahawk 6 silicon, the QFX5250 delivers up to 102.4Tbps of Ethernet bandwidth, providing the necessary throughput for intensive AI workloads.
“The QFX5250 combines HPE’s advanced liquid cooling technology with Juniper’s Junos networking software and integrated AIops intelligence,” Rahim stated. “This combination delivers a high-performance, power-efficient, and simplified operational experience for next-generation AI inference.” Liquid cooling is becoming increasingly vital as GPU power consumption continues to rise, and the QFX5250 represents a significant step towards sustainable AI infrastructure. According to a recent report by the International Energy Agency (IEA), data centers already account for around 1% of global electricity consumption, and this figure is expected to increase dramatically with the proliferation of AI.
Strategic Partnerships Fuel Expansion
The success of these new offerings hinges on strong partnerships, and HPE and Juniper are doubling down on their collaborations with both Nvidia and AMD. The companies have expanded their relationship with Nvidia, incorporating HPE Juniper edge onramp and long-haul data center interconnect (DCI) support into the Nvidia AI Computing by HPE portfolio. This extension leverages the MX and Juniper’s PTX hyperscaler routers to provide high-scale, secure, and low-latency connections between users, devices, and AI factories, as well as between clusters deployed across geographically dispersed locations or multiple cloud environments.
This expanded partnership is particularly important as organizations increasingly adopt a distributed AI strategy, deploying workloads across hybrid and multi-cloud environments. The ability to seamlessly connect these disparate environments is critical for maximizing the value of AI investments. Furthermore, the focus on low-latency connections is essential for applications such as real-time fraud detection, autonomous vehicles, and high-frequency trading.
