Düsseldorf: Tram Derailment Causes Injuries & Disruption
Düsseldorf Tram Derailment Injures Multiple, Disrupts Service
Düsseldorf, Germany – A serious tram accident in Düsseldorf-Holthausen Wednesday morning left multiple people injured, one critically, after a tram derailed. The incident involving a U72 line tram occurred at 5:43 a.m., triggering a large emergency response and significant disruption to public transport.
What Happened?
Firefighters arriving at the scene found numerous passengers still inside the tram, but thankfully, no one was trapped requiring technical rescue. “We had to transport nine people to nearby hospitals with ambulances,” a fire department spokesperson stated. Eight sustained minor injuries, while one was seriously hurt, though their life is not currently in danger. An additional seven individuals received on-site medical attention, treated in the lobby of a nearby hotel to provide warmth and better lighting. Police reports indicate a total of 13 injured, including the one critically wounded.
Recovery Efforts Underway
As of midday, recovery operations were in full swing. Fire crews are meticulously working to return the tram to the tracks, a process requiring the careful lifting of each segment of the tram car with a crane and precise placement back onto the rails. The first car was successfully re-railed in the afternoon and prepared for removal. A second crane, provided by a specialist firm, was requested to assist with the second car.
Service Disruption and Timelines
Transport authorities are cautiously optimistic that U72 service could resume Wednesday evening. However, the U76 line faces more extensive repairs, potentially lasting until the weekend of December 6th or 7th, requiring the involvement of multiple repair companies.
Investigation Launched: What Caused the Derailment?
The cause of the derailment remains under investigation. A spokesperson for the Rheinbahn, the local transport authority, stated that the train’s event recorder will be analyzed. Initial indications suggest a possible issue with a faulty switch. The system relies on wireless communication between the trams and the switch mechanisms to ensure correct alignment.
However, tram drivers are required to verify the switch position both visually and through signal indicators. If a switch is found to be incorrectly set, drivers are obligated to manually adjust it using a switch iron. Investigators are now determining whether a signal malfunction occurred or if human error played a role.
Extent of the Damage
The first car of the U72 line derailed and came to rest across the tracks, causing the second car to collide with it and become wedged. Two overhead power line masts were also damaged, one severely, adding to the complexity of the recovery operation.
Impact on Commuters
The incident has caused significant disruption for commuters in Holthausen and surrounding areas. The U76 line is currently terminating at Kaiserslauterner Straße, and the U72 line at Südpark. Replacement bus services are in operation on the affected sections.
Official Response
Düsseldorf Mayor Stephan Keller, currently attending a conference of the German Cities Association in Berlin, expressed his concern. “I have received reports of the collision and derailment of the tram in Holthausen. I wish all those injured a speedy and full recovery. My thanks go to all the emergency services involved,” he said in a statement.
