Deadly Hague Crash Follows Police Stop, Sparks Investigation
The Hague, Netherlands – A high-speed chase ended in tragedy early Monday morning when a car crashed into a tree on the Bezuidenhoutseweg, near Paleis Huis ten Bosch, resulting in the deaths of three young people and leaving a fourth critically injured. The incident has prompted an investigation by the Rijksrecherche, the Dutch national investigative service for police actions.
According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, police initiated a traffic stop at approximately 4:40 AM on the Fluwelen Burgwal after observing the vehicle speeding. The driver, identified as a 24-year-old man from The Hague, allegedly disregarded the stop signal and fled, initiating a pursuit that covered roughly three kilometers.
During the chase, authorities maintained a safe distance from the vehicle, according to a preliminary assessment. However, the driver lost control of the Mini on the Bezuidenhoutseweg, mounting the curb multiple times before ultimately colliding with a tree on the central reservation. The impact caused the car to overturn and immediately burst into flames.
The victims have been identified as Mara, 21, and Doris, 20, both from The Hague, and the driver. A 20-year-old woman was rescued from the wreckage and transported to a hospital with injuries. Her condition remains undisclosed.
Grief and Outpouring of Support
The families of Mara and Doris are reeling from the loss. “The ground has been swept from under our feet,” a statement released through family representative Bart Visser of Namens de Familie read. “It’s incomprehensible, unfair, and impossible to grasp.”
The injured survivor is now at home, deeply affected and grieving the loss of her friends. Funerals for Mara and Doris are planned later this week, with families, friends, and acquaintances preparing to say their final goodbyes.
A spontaneous memorial has sprung up at the crash site, with a large collection of flowers and lit candles. Visser conveyed the families’ gratitude for the outpouring of sympathy and requested privacy during this difficult time.
Investigation Underway
The Rijksrecherche is conducting a thorough investigation into the events leading up to the crash, including reviewing witness statements, examining security camera footage, and interviewing the surviving passenger. This independent body investigates any instance where police action results in injury or death, ensuring accountability and transparency.
The reason for the driver’s initial decision to evade police remains unclear. The Public Prosecutor’s Office released a preliminary statement acknowledging the severity of the incident and the public concern it has generated.
Traffic fatalities in the Netherlands, while relatively low compared to other European nations, remain a serious concern. According to data from the Dutch Statistics Bureau (CBS), 223 people died in traffic accidents in 2023, a slight increase from the previous year. The majority of these fatalities involved vulnerable road users such as cyclists and motorcyclists.
This case highlights the potential dangers of high-speed chases and the importance of responsible driving. The Rijksrecherche’s investigation will aim to determine whether police procedures were followed correctly and if any contributing factors led to this tragic outcome.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
