Córdoba Weather: Heatwave & Storms Forecast This Week
Córdoba Braces for Heatwave and Potential Storms
Córdoba, Argentina is entering a period of weather instability, marked by rising temperatures and the threat of severe storms. Residents are being urged to prepare for several days of intense heat, high humidity, and potential disruptions.
Rising Temperatures and Humidity
Meteorologist Mario Navarro forecasts a significant increase in cloud cover this Thursday, accompanied by scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. While the arrival of unsettled weather offers a slight reprieve, the overall trend points towards a sustained heatwave. Thursday’s high is expected to reach around 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit), kicking off a string of warm days.
The heat will intensify through the weekend. Friday will see temperatures climb to an estimated 35 degrees Celsius (95 Fahrenheit), with Saturday potentially reaching a scorching 37 degrees Celsius (99 Fahrenheit) across much of the province.
“The combination of high temperatures and humidity creates a dangerous situation, particularly for vulnerable populations,” explains Dr. Isabel Ramirez, a public health specialist at the University of Córdoba. “It’s crucial to stay hydrated, seek shade, and check on elderly neighbors and family members.”
Storms on the Horizon
While the heat will dominate the immediate forecast, Navarro warns of more significant weather changes on the horizon. Between Sunday and Monday, the region could experience strong thunderstorms.
“Although temperatures will moderate slightly during the storm period, peaking around 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit), the storms themselves could be severe,” Navarro stated. “Residents should be prepared for heavy rainfall and potential localized flooding.”
Potential Power Outages
The approaching storms also raise concerns about potential power outages. EPEC, the local energy provider, is preparing for possible disruptions to service. Residents are advised to charge essential devices and have a plan in place in case of outages.
Argentina has experienced a rise in extreme weather events in recent years, a trend linked to broader global climate change patterns. According to a 2023 report by the World Meteorological Organization, South America is experiencing faster warming rates than the global average, increasing the frequency and intensity of heatwaves and extreme precipitation events.
This period of combined heat, humidity, and instability will test Córdoba’s infrastructure and public health systems. Authorities are urging residents to stay informed, take precautions, and be prepared for changing conditions.
