Chile: Late Enrollment 2026 – Register for School Spots Now
Chile Offers Second Chance for School Enrollment in 2026
SANTIAGO – Chilean families in nine regions are gaining another opportunity to enroll their children in school for the 2026 academic year. The Ministry of Education launched the “Late Applications – Register on the List 2026” process on Wednesday, December 17th, providing a crucial lifeline for those who missed earlier registration deadlines.
The initiative addresses a persistent challenge in Chile’s education system: ensuring equitable access to schooling, particularly in areas with high demand. According to recent data from the Ministry of Education, approximately 5% of students nationwide require placement through late enrollment processes each year, often due to relocation or unforeseen circumstances.
Who Can Register?
This late enrollment period isn’t just for those who missed the initial deadlines. It’s designed to support a range of families, including:
- Families who did not participate in the initial 2026 School Admission System.
- Those who participated in the main and supplementary admission periods but were not assigned a school or were assigned one based on proximity rather than preference.
- Students repeating a grade who need a place in a different level.
- Families requiring a place during the year due to a change of city or other qualifying reasons.
“This system transforms the old, often chaotic, in-person waiting lists into a transparent, public record based on order of arrival,” explained a spokesperson for the Ministry of Education. “Families can now register online, see their position in real-time, and receive notifications if a place becomes available.”
How to Register and Check Availability
Registration opened at 9:00 AM local time and is accessible through the Ministry of Education’s online platform: Anótate en la Lista. Applicants will need their Chilean national ID number (RUN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (IPA) and password.
Crucially, places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. The Ministry advises families to register promptly. To check which schools still have available spaces, visit vacantes.mineduc.cl.
Regional Rollout
The late enrollment process is being rolled out regionally. It began on December 17th for families in the O’Higgins, Maule, Ñuble, Biobío, La Araucanía, Los Ríos, Los Lagos, Aysén, and Magallanes regions. Enrollment for the northern regions and Valparaíso began on Monday, December 15th, and will extend to the Metropolitan Region starting this Friday, December 19th.
It’s important to note that if a waiting list doesn’t appear to be moving, it simply means there are currently no vacancies available in the selected schools. The Ministry encourages families to regularly check the vacantes.mineduc.cl platform for updates.
This initiative underscores the Chilean government’s commitment to ensuring that all children have access to quality education, regardless of circumstance. The streamlined online process aims to reduce administrative burdens and provide greater transparency for families navigating the school enrollment system.
