Bushiroad Games Shutting Down: Changes for BanG Dream! & Hunter x Hunter Games
Bushiroad Shifts Gears: Mobile and Console Games to Diverge Under New Publishing Labels
TOKYO – Japanese entertainment giant Bushiroad announced a significant restructuring of its video game publishing operations this week, signaling a shift in strategy for its popular franchises. Effective immediately, the company will separate its mobile and console game divisions under distinct branding, a move analysts suggest aims to streamline development and marketing efforts.
Mobile Focus for Bushimo, Direct Branding for Consoles
Going forward, Bushiroad’s mobile titles will be published under the Bushimo label, while console games will carry the Bushiroad name directly. This impacts high-profile titles such as the rhythm game BanG Dream! Girls Band Party and the highly anticipated Hunter x Hunter Nen x Survival, both of which will now operate under the Bushimo division.
The move comes less than two years after the launch of Bushiroad Games in January 2023. The initial intent behind that unified label was to consolidate the company’s mobile publishing efforts, bringing titles like Goblin Slayer -Another Adventurer- Nightmare Feast, MACROSS Shooting Insight, and Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation – Quest of Memories under one banner. However, the company now appears to be reverting to a more segmented approach.
Industry Consolidation Continues
Bushiroad’s restructuring isn’t happening in a vacuum. The Japanese entertainment industry has seen a wave of consolidation in recent years, driven by the increasing costs of game development and the need to compete in a global market. According to a recent report by the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA), the Japanese game market generated approximately ¥6.6 trillion (roughly $45 billion USD) in revenue in 2023, highlighting the sector’s economic importance.
Beyond the publishing shift, Bushiroad is actively strengthening its position within the broader industry. The company maintains a majority stake in Frontwing Lab and recently increased its ownership in SANZIGEN Animation Studio to 14.4%, demonstrating a commitment to expanding its influence across multiple facets of entertainment.
“This restructuring suggests Bushiroad is responding to market dynamics and aiming for greater efficiency,” says gaming industry analyst Hiroki Sato. “Separating mobile and console divisions allows for more focused marketing and development strategies tailored to each platform’s unique audience.”
The decision to refocus publishing strategies comes as the mobile gaming market continues its explosive growth, projected to reach $167.4 billion in 2024, according to Statista. Console gaming remains a significant force, but requires different marketing and development approaches.
The long-term impact of this restructuring remains to be seen, but it signals a proactive approach by Bushiroad to navigate the evolving landscape of the video game industry.
