Brno Women’s Basketball Game Interrupted by Power Outage | EuroCup Drama
Basketball Game Plunged into Darkness, Dispute Erupts Over Continuation
BRNO, Czech Republic – A EuroCup women’s basketball game between KP Brno of the Czech Republic and Sassari of Italy descended into unusual circumstances Tuesday night when a power outage halted play with just three and a half minutes remaining. The incident has sparked a disagreement over whether and how the game should be completed.
At the time of the interruption, KP Brno held a narrow lead of 69-67. But the game was overshadowed by the sudden loss of power, leaving the arena in complete darkness.
“They just left us here in the dark on the court, everyone else had already left – the home team, the referees, everyone,” Jaroslav Michálek, manager of KP Brno, told reporters. “We were the only ones in the hall, it was dark and cold.”
The situation escalated as Sassari representatives proposed finishing the game in an alternative venue. However, KP Brno rejected this suggestion, as well as the possibility of resuming play on Friday. Michálek explained that after consulting with the Czech basketball federation, they were advised to insist on the game being officially concluded.
“Sassari is still pushing to finish the game,” Michálek added, “It seems we’ve reached an impasse.”
Impact on EuroCup Qualification
The outcome of this game carries weight within the broader EuroCup competition. The tournament structure allows the top two teams from each group, along with the four best third-place teams, to advance to the next stage. A suspended or incomplete game can significantly impact a team’s standing and chances of progressing.
According to Euroleague Basketball statistics, approximately 140 teams participate in EuroCup competitions annually, representing over 20 European countries. The league’s increasing popularity underscores the importance of fair play and consistent application of regulations, particularly in situations involving unforeseen circumstances like power failures.
Chomutov Faces Challenges in Lithuania
In a separate EuroCup contest, Chomutov, another Czech team, faced its own hurdles in Lithuania. They were without key player Kateřina Bartoňová, who is recovering from a hand surgery. Despite her absence, Kateřina Rokošová led Chomutov with 15 points and 6 rebounds, supported by Monika Fučíková and Eliška Brejchová, who each contributed 13 points.
The incident in Brno highlights the logistical and regulatory complexities inherent in international sports. While power outages are rare, they underscore the need for clear protocols and contingency plans to ensure fair competition and protect the interests of all involved parties. The resolution of this dispute will likely set a precedent for handling similar situations in future EuroCup games.
The Czech Basketball Federation has not yet issued a formal statement regarding the incident, but is expected to provide further clarification in the coming days.
