Brian May Shares Health Update: A Brush with Mortality and a Renewed Drive for Life
The legendary guitarist of Queen, Brian May, is opening up about his health journey, specifically reflecting on a “mini-stroke” he experienced in September 2024 that left him temporarily unable to control his left arm. The 77-year-old musician recently spoke with ITV’s Love Your Weekend, offering a candid and optimistic perspective on his recovery and current well-being.
Brian May, guitarist for Queen, discusses his recovery and new outlook on life after a recent health scare.
A Wake-Up Call and a Commitment to Health
May described past health incidents, including a significant heart attack in May 2020, as “wake-up calls,” emphasizing his fortunate ability to navigate through them. The recent mini-stroke brought a renewed focus on his health, prompting a significant shift in his daily routine.
“I’ve been lucky. These things happen, but it seems I always manage to get through them. They give you a wake-up call.”

Prioritizing his physical well-being, May has integrated consistent activity into his life. “I keep moving. I go out on my bicycle several times a week. I do a hundred lengths in the pool once a week. For me, that’s what keeps me going. That’s what keeps me alive,” he shared, noting that medical professionals have confirmed his approach is correct.
Recalling the Incident and a Plea for Calm
May had previously detailed the mini-stroke in an Instagram video, describing its sudden onset and the unsettling loss of control over his arm. He recalled being rushed to the hospital with sirens blaring, a dramatic experience he recounted with a touch of dark humor.
He also revealed his initial decision to withhold information about his condition to avoid undue attention and sympathy. “I didn’t want to say anything at the time because I didn’t want to generate a fuss around me. I really don’t want sympathy. Please, don’t do that because it will fill my inbox, and I hate that. The good news is that I’m okay,” he explained in the video.
Brian May initially kept his health struggles private to avoid overwhelming sympathy.
A Resilient Spirit and a Return to the Stage
Despite these health challenges, May has demonstrated remarkable resilience. He has made a notable return to performing, including two appearances with rising artist Benson Boone, one at Coachella and another in London. His stage presence is a testament to his ongoing recovery and enduring passion for music.
May’s health journey over the past few years has been public, including:
- A heart attack in May 2020, complicated by medication side effects.
- A “small procedure” on his eye in 2021.
- The recent mini-stroke in September 2024.
These experiences underscore the universal importance of proactive health management, regardless of one’s public profile. May’s candid reflections offer a powerful reminder that even global icons face personal health battles, and that a positive outlook combined with diligent self-care can lead to a meaningful recovery and a continued vibrant life.
