Binter Cancellation: Porto Santo Passengers Stranded After Flight Disruption
Binter Canarias Flight Cancellations Leave Passengers Stranded in Madeira and Porto Santo
Porto Santo, Madeira – Passengers traveling to and from the island of Porto Santo are facing significant disruptions after Binter Canarias cancelled flights, leaving many stranded and prompting criticism from local officials and travelers. The cancellations come as Madeira International Airport – Cristiano Ronaldo Airport recovers from a two-day closure due to severe weather conditions caused by Depression Emilia.
Francisco Oliveira, president of the Madeira Teachers’ Union (SPM), publicly voiced his frustration via a video posted on social media, highlighting the impact of the cancellations, particularly on those traveling to Porto Santo. “This is an irresponsible treatment by Binter,” Oliveira stated in the video, appearing alongside a group of affected passengers. “There are Portuguese citizens here, but the majority are foreigners, and many residents of Porto Santo are reluctant to speak out for fear of repercussions.”
The initial explanation provided by the airline cited adverse weather as the reason for the cancellations. However, passengers claim they were later informed the issue stemmed from crew unavailability. “They initially told us it was the weather, but then they confessed the crew didn’t show up,” Oliveira explained.
The situation has been ongoing since Friday, leaving travelers in limbo and raising concerns about the economic impact on Porto Santo, a smaller island heavily reliant on tourism and accessibility. Oliveira is urging government officials to intervene and hold Binter Canarias accountable.
“Binter cannot simply disregard people who want to travel to Porto Santo. This is very bad for Porto Santo. We haven’t had a flight for almost three days,” he said.
While Madeira International Airport has largely resumed operations, with aircraft landing and departing throughout the day, the Binter Canarias ATR 72 aircraft remained grounded. This specific cancellation has amplified existing anxieties about reliable air travel to and from the smaller islands within the Madeira archipelago.
The disruption comes at a critical time, potentially impacting the region’s tourism sector during the peak holiday season. According to data from the Madeira Regional Statistics Bureau, air travel accounts for over 85% of tourist arrivals to Porto Santo, making consistent flight schedules vital for the island’s economy.
Binter Canarias has not yet issued a comprehensive statement addressing the specific concerns raised by passengers and officials. The airline’s website currently lists flight disruptions but provides limited details regarding the crew availability issues.
The incident underscores the vulnerability of island communities to disruptions in air travel and the importance of robust contingency planning by airlines to mitigate the impact on passengers and local economies.
