Biathlon World Cup Annecy: Results & Standings – Women’s Sprint
Bátovská Fialková Delivers Season Best with Fifth Place in Annecy Biathlon Sprint
Annecy, France – Paulína Bátovská Fialková of Slovakia delivered a standout performance, securing fifth place in the women’s 7.5km sprint at the Biathlon World Cup in Annecy-Le Grand Bornand on Thursday. The result marks her best finish of the season, a welcome boost as the biathlon circuit progresses.
Hanna Öberg of Sweden claimed the gold medal with a time of 19:24.9, followed closely by Lou Jeanmonot of France (+3.3 seconds) and Italy’s Dorothea Wierer (+11.4 seconds). Lisa Vittozzi (Italy) finished fourth, just ahead of Bátovská Fialková (+16.2 seconds).
Bátovská Fialková’s success hinged on a flawless shooting performance – a clean run in both the prone and standing positions. This is particularly significant given previous struggles with consistency on the range this season. “Finally, I managed a perfect race, from start to finish. I was able to hit those two zeros I’ve been dreaming of,” Bátovská Fialková shared with RTVS, expressing her delight even before knowing her final ranking. “Today will be a perfect day for me, regardless of the final result. It’s a very physically demanding course.”
A Return to Form for the Slovakian Veteran
The 33-year-old Slovakian biathlete has faced a challenging start to the World Cup season, with a 34th-place finish in the Östersund sprint being her previous best individual result. Inconsistent shooting had been a recurring issue, but she overcame that in Annecy.
Starting with bib number nine, Bátovská Fialková quickly established herself as a contender, swiftly clearing all five targets in the prone position. She maintained a strong pace, briefly holding the fastest time before being edged out by Vittozzi and ultimately the podium finishers. Her final time of 19:41.1 demonstrated a significant improvement in both shooting and skiing performance.
Slovakian Team Performance
While Bátovská Fialková’s fifth-place finish was the highlight for Slovakia, teammates also competed. Mária Remeňová finished 46th with a single penalty (+1:47.9), qualifying for the pursuit race. Ema Kapustová, despite a clean shooting record, finished 61st (+2:12.6), narrowly missing the pursuit qualification. Zuzana Remeňová finished 86th with two penalties (+3:06.0).
Impact on World Cup Standings
Bátovská Fialková’s strong performance has significantly improved her position in the overall World Cup standings. She has climbed 30 places to 36th overall, accumulating 57 points. She now sits 18th in the sprint standings with 57 points.
The overall World Cup standings are currently led by Sweden’s Anna Magnusson (317 points), followed by France’s Lou Jeanmonnot (316 points) and Norway’s Maren Kirkeeide (294 points). Italy’s Dorothea Wierer and Finland’s Suvi Minkkinen round out the top five.
Looking Ahead: Pursuit Race
The Biathlon World Cup in Annecy continues with the women’s pursuit race on Friday, where Bátovská Fialková and Remeňová will represent Slovakia. The pursuit race will test the athletes’ endurance and shooting skills under pressure, building on the foundation laid in Thursday’s sprint.
