Liam Cooper Returns to England with Sheffield Wednesday
Liam Cooper Joins Sheffield Wednesday, Eyeing Championship Stability
By Graham Delaney, Sports Editor
Experienced Scottish defender Liam Cooper has penned a deal with Championship club Sheffield Wednesday until the end of the season, signaling his return to English football. The move comes after a brief stint with Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia.
Cooper brings a wealth of experience to Hillsborough, having spent a decade at Leeds United after joining in the summer of 2014. During his time at Elland Road, he was a key figure in the Whites’ defense, experiencing promotion back to the Premier League and playing three seasons in the top flight. He also represented Scotland, earning 19 caps and featuring in the UEFA European Championships in 2020 and 2024.
The 33-year-old began his career at his hometown club Hull City, with loan spells at Carlisle United, Huddersfield Town, and Chesterfield during his formative years.
His move to CSKA Sofia in 2024, however, did not meet expectations, and his contract with the Bulgarian club was terminated prematurely in the summer. Sheffield Wednesday, currently navigating a challenging period, will be hoping Cooper’s leadership and defensive prowess can provide much-needed stability.
A Familiar Landscape for Cooper
Returning to the English Championship presents a familiar challenge for Cooper. The league is renowned for its demanding schedule and intensity, a level at which he has proven his capabilities over many years with Leeds United. His experience in crucial matches, including playoff campaigns and Premier League battles, could prove invaluable for a Sheffield Wednesday side aiming to solidify its position.
The transfer underscores Sheffield Wednesday’s strategy to bring in seasoned professionals as they aim to build a more robust squad. The club’s ability to secure a player of Cooper’s caliber, even on a short-term deal, highlights their ambition to climb the league standings.
Cooper’s transfer is more than just a player acquisition; it’s a move that could inject confidence and experience into the Sheffield Wednesday dressing room. The hope is that his presence will galvanize the team as they strive for success in the demanding Championship.
